Epiphora

Epiphora is a condition in which excessive watering of eyes takes place, clinically the condition comprises inadequate tears drainage from the tear drainage system (Nasolacrimal system).

Causes of epiphora

  • Irritation and inflammation of Eyes
  • Aging can be one of the reasons for the watering of the eyes.
  • Hindrance in the tear outflow tract
  • Common Cold.
  • Failure of the nasolacrimal duct to open in neonates and infants.
  • Poor restoration of the nasolacrimal duct system after trauma to the area.
  • Facial fractures (soft tissue trauma)
  • Lids disorder (lids turn inwards and ectropion lids)

Diagnosis

  • Epiphora is diagnosed by clinical examination, history and presentation of the lids.
  • Fluorescein dye (to detect the obstruction).

Homeopathic treatment for epiphora

Temporary symptomatic relief can be achieved for a short period of time by using homeopathy. Long-term benefit cannot be achieved. Homeopathy is not suggested for epiphora.
